HOW TO KNOW GOD AND HAVE PEACE WITH HIM

John 1:1-5

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

John 1:10-13

He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.

John 3:14-18

Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.

John 5:24

I tell you the truth; whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.

John 6:29

Jesus answered, The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent."

John 6:40

For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.

John 11:25-27

Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this? Yes, Lord, she told him. I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world. 

John 14:6

Jesus answered, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. 

John 20:30,31

Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Acts 2:22-28, 21

Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. This man was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge: and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.. (v21) And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

Acts 4:12

Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.

Acts 13:38-39

Therefore, my brothers, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sin is proclaimed to you. Through him everyone who believes is justified from everything you could not be justified by the law of Moses.

Romans 3:10-12,23

There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless: there is no one who does good, not even one. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

Romans 5:1-2

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith in this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.

Romans 5:8

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 10:9,13

..That if you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. ...for everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. 

Ephesians 2:8

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God not by works, so that no one can boast.

Ephesians 2:13-16

But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one (Jew and Gentile) and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace, and in this one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility.

Colosians 1:15-20

He (Christ Jesus) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood shed on the cross.

Revelation 3:20

Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.

CHRIST'S RETURN

Matthew 24:36

No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, NOR THE SON, but only the Father.

Luke 12:40

You must also be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

So when they met together, they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?"

He said to them, "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority..."

I Thessalonians 1:10

...and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead -- Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.

I Thessalonians 4:13-18

Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not proceed those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage each other with these words.

I Thessalonians 5:1

NOW, BROTHERS, ABOUT TIMES AND DATES WE DO NOT NEED TO WRITE TO YOU. FOR YOU KNOW VERY WELL THAT THE DAY OF THE LORD WILL COME LIKE A THIEF IN THE NIGHT

II Thessalonians 2:1-12

Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers, not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by some prophecy, report or letter supposed to have come from us, saying that the day of the Lord has already come. Don't let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God's temple, proclaiming himself to be God. Don't you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things? And now you know that is holding him back, to that he may be revealed at the proper time. For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work: but the one who holds it back (the HOLY SPIRIT) will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the spender of his coming. The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.

CHRISTIAN LIVING, HARDSHIP, SUFFERING

What is the offense of the Gospel? What is it about the Gospel that causes us to ignore it or brings out contempt in those who disbelieve?

  1. The veracity of the man Jesus Christ and HIS story - the virgin birth, death and resurrection.
  2. We become responsible / accountable for our actions / lives.
  3. The FREE GIFT OF LIFE obtained by FAITH rather than salvation by works and effort.
  4. The life of a Christian is lived by faith, demonstrating faith by a life of love towards others and a secure, well founded hope stored up for us in heaven.

Persecutions come because of :

  1. Those who refuse to accept responsibility / accountability for their actions or who are forced into a position of being responsible / accountable for their actions ~~ kill the messenger with the message thinking that responsibility and accountability will go away.
  2. Envy and jealousy of those who don't accept the message.
  3. Envy and jealousy of those who may realize a decline in income as a result of the message.
  4. A life-style change from that of the group norm.

Psalms 34:19

A righteous man may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all......

Daniel 7:21

As I watched, this horn was waging war against the saints and DEFEATING THEM, until the Ancient of Days came and pronounced judgment in favor of the saints of the Most High....

Daniel 7:25

He will speak against the Most High and oppress his saints and try to change the set times and the laws. THE SAINTS WILL BE HANDED OVER TO HIM FOR A TIME, TIMES AND HALF A TIME.

Daniel 11:32

With flattery he will corrupt those who have violated the covenant, but the people who know their God will firmly resist him.

Daniel 11:35

Some of the wise will stumble, so that they may be refined, purified and made spotless until the time of the end,.....

John 16:2

...in fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God.

II Corinthians 6:4-10

I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death.

...You became imitators of us and of the Lord; in spite of SEVER SUFFERINGS, you welcomed the message with the JOY given by the Holy Spirit.

...but with the help of God we dared to tell you his gospel in spite of strong opposition...

We sent Timothy...to strengthen and encourage you in your faith, so that no one would be unsettled by these trials. YOU KNOW QUITE WELL THAT WE WERE DESTINED FOR THEM. IN FACT, WHEN WE WERE WITH YOU, WE KEPT TELLING YOU THAT WE WOULD BE PERSECUTED....

CHRISTIAN ATTITUDE

Luke 12:15

..."Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."

Then Jesus said to his disciples: "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what your will wear. Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.....your Father knows that you need them. But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

Philippians 3:7-8

But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus, my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him.

I Thessalonians 1:3

I Thessalonians 2:13

...when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe.

DEFINITIONS

Freedom:
(in Christ) Free from the requirement to observe the (Mosaic) "LAW" for justification and salvation. In Christ we are set "free" from the grip of our base human nature with it's passions and lusts and "free" to serve Christ and develop the fruit of the spirit.
Gentiles:
Anyone who is not Jewish
Jews:
People of the covenant of God
Law / Mosaic law:
(rules, regulations, commands, ceremonial obligations) the Jews had to keep in order to stay in God's favor and maintain God's covenant.
Love:
(human point of view) An emotion dependent on circumstances, situation, the object being "loved".
Love:
(God's point of view) An attitude independent of circumstances.

Proverbs 22: 14

The mouth of an adulteress is a deep pit; he who is under the Lord's wrath will fall into it

John 15:1,2

I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, so that it will be even more fruitful.

Hebrews 12:7,10

Endure hardship as discipline........but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

I Peter 1:6-7

in this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your FAITH - of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire - may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.

FAITH AND OBEDIENCE, RIGHTEOUSNESS

FAITH
is the door by which we enter into God's kingdom. OUR CHOICE is the key to open the door
is a seed that is planted in every person that must be watered and cared for in order to grow and mature.
is a gift given by God that must be developed and refined.
OBEDIENCE
is the action, attitude, desire to do what God asks of us. It is OUR CHOICE.

FAITH AND OBEDIENCE working together produce RIGHTEOUSNESS. We are considered RIGHTEOUS when we FAITHFULLY OBEY GOD in all that HE asks us to do.

Deuteronomy 6: 24, 25

The Lord commanded us to OBEY all these decrees and to fear the Lord our God, so that we might always prosper and be kept alive, as is the case today. And IF we are careful to OBEY all this law before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us, THAT WILL BE OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Habakkuk 2:4 (Galatians 3:11)

The Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: "All nations will be blessed through you." So those who have faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

Galatians 3:14

He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.

But the Scripture declares that the whole world is a prisoner of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe. ...So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith. It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them.

I do not trust in my bow, my sword does nor bring me victory; but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame. In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever.

Psalm 50:9-15, 23

I have no need of a bull from your stall or of goats from your pens, for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. Daniel 4:17

...so that the living MAY KNOW that the Most High is SOVEREIGN over the kingdoms of men and gives them to anyone he wishes and sets over them the lowliest of men.

Daniel 4:25-27

...Seven times will pass by for you UNTIL YOU ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE MOST HIGH IS SOVEREIGN OVER THE KINGDOMS OF MEN and gives them to anyone he wishes. The command to leave the stump of the tree with its roots means that your kingdom will be restored to you WHEN YOU ACKNOWLEDGE THAT HEAVEN RULES.

Daniel 5:20, 21

But when his HEART became ARROGANT and HARDENED with PRIDE, he was deposed from his royal throne and stripped of his glory. He was driven away from people and given the mind of an animal: he lived with the wild donkey's and ate grass like cattle; and his body was drenched with the dew of heaven, UNTIL HE ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THE MOST HIGH GOD IS SOVEREIGN over the kingdoms of men and sets over them anyone he wishes.

Ephesians 5:19-20

Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Philippians 4:4-7

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: REJOICE! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition, WITH THANKSGIVING, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

GOD'S ATTRIBUTES

Psalm 145:8-9

The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made.....

Psalm 145:13-20

...The Lord is faithful to all his promises and loving toward all he had made. The Lord upholds all those who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down.....The Lord is righteous in all his ways and loving toward all he has made. The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them. The Lord watches over all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy.

Psalm 147:10-11

HIS PLEASURE IS NOT IN THE STRENGTH OF THE HORSE, NOR HIS DELIGHT IN THE LEGS OF A MAN; THE LORD DELIGHTS IN THOSE WHO FEAR HIM, WHO PUT THEIR HOPE IN HIS UNFAILING LOVE.

Ezekiel 18:23

Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign Lord. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live? .....For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign Lord. REPENT AND LIVE!

GOD'S GIFTS

Ephesians 1:3

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

Ephesians 1:6

...to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves...

Ephesians 1:7-8

...in accordance with the riches of God's grace that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding...

Ephesians 2:8

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith ~ and that not from yourselves, it is the gift of God ~ not by works, so that no one can boast.

Ephesians 4:7-13

But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it.........It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

GOD'S JUDGMENT

Matthew 12:35,36

The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.

Romans 14:10-12

You, then, why do you judge you brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? FOR WE WILL ALL STAND BEFORE GOD'S JUDGEMENT SEAT. It is written, " 'As surely as I live,' says the Lord, 'every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.' " So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.

II Corinthians 5:10

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

II Thessalonians 1:5, 7

All this is evidence that God's judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering. GOD IS JUST. He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you and give relief to you who are troubled...

..This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels. He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.

Jude 1:4-7

For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord. Though you already know all this, I want to remind you that the Lord delivered his people out of Egypt, but later destroyed those who did not believe. And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home - these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day. In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversions. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.

Genesis 17:10-11 Purpose of Circumcision

This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised. You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you.

How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity! For then, the Lord bestows his blessing, even life forevermore.

"Master," said John, "We saw a man driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us." "Do not stop him," Jesus said, "for whoever is not against you is for you."

John 10:16

I have other sheep (GENTILES) that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them in also. They too will listen to my voice, and there will be one flock and one shepherd.

Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up, "You know nothing at all! You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish." PREDESTINATION, FOREKNOWLEDGE, WILL, PROMISES

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

  • Establishes Ownership - authority to do as he pleases when he pleases with the things he created.
  • Establishes Sovereignty - created the heavens and the earth by his own will, purpose and plan.
  • Demonstrates God's eternal qualities / attributes - creativity, knowledge, wisdom, understanding, communication, planning, power, absolute control, love.....

It's a matter of PERSPECTIVE:

GOD'S PERSPECTIVE or point of view - (1) He is sovereign, (2) knows the future, (3) and has an all encompassing plan for His creation (all things created, i.e. mankind, animals, nature, the world).

God exhibits his attributes of Justice, Fairness, Love, Compassion, Foreknowledge, Power, Planning, Communication within the framework of His position as Creator of all that is known and unknown, seen and unseen.

MAN'S PERSPECTIVE or point of view - (1) He has freedom to chose, (2) must take responsibility for his choices, (3) and benefits or suffers the results of his choice.

ABRAHAM

God deals with him unilaterally, not "if / then". HOWEVER, AT ANY TIME ABRAHAM COULD HAVE MADE THE DECISION TO NOT FOLLOW GOD AND GO HIS OWN WAY

Genesis 12:2

I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse, and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.

Genesis 12:7

The Lord appeared to Abram and said, To your offspring I will give this land..........

LOVE

GOD'S PERSPECTIVE or point of view - an ATTITUDE, a determination independent of circumstances, situations or the object of love. Unconditional love (i.e. mothers and children).

MAN'S PERSPECTIVE or point of view - an EMOTION, a feeling that comes and goes depending on circumstances and situations. We love someone or something as long as it is pleasing or useful to us - conditional love (i.e. husbands and wives).

John 13:34

A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. BY THIS ALL MEN WILL KNOW THAT YOU ARE MY DISCIPLES, IF YOU LOVE ONE ANOTHER.

Putting on the FULL ARMOR OF GOD

Ephesians 6:11-18

Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. THEREFORE PUT ON THE FULL ARMOR OF GOD, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground and after you have done everything to stand. Stand firm then, with the BELT OF TRUTH, buckled around your waist, with the BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the GOSPEL OF PEACE. In addition to all this, take up the SHIELD OF FAITH, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the HELMET OF SALVATION and the SWORD OF THE SPIRIT which is the WORD OF GOD. And pray in the Spirit on all occassions with all kinds of prayers and requests.

Isaiah 59:17

He put on RIGHTEOUSNESS as his BREASTPLATE, and the HELMET of SALVATION on his head;...........

I Thess. 5:8

But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on FAITH and LOVE as a BREASTPLATE, and the hope of SALVATION as a HELMET.

If you see the donkey of one who hates you lying under its burden, you shall refrain from leaving him with it, you shall help him to lift it up.

REVENGE

Proverbs 24:17, 18

Do not gloat when your enemy falls; when he stumbles, do not let your heart rejoice, for the Lord will see and disapprove and turn his wrath away from him.

Proverbs 24:29

Do not say, 'I'll do to him as he has done to me: I'll pay that man back for what he did.'

What is an evil desire?
A desire to do what is contrary to God's clear command and will

It is not evil to be like God - Be Holy for I AM Holy!

It is evil to want to take God's place and put Him aside. Our position is not in the center - God is the center and we are conformed to His image.

II Corinthians 12:20

...I fear there may be quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, factions, slander, gossip, arrogance and disorder...

Galatians 5:19-21

The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissentions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
